What to look for in plus size leggings
A high, wide waistband
A narrow elastic waistband digs in and easily rolls down when you move. A high, wide waistband spreads the pressure and stays in place better. Try the leggings on sitting down and bending over before you decide.
A fabric that stays opaque when stretched
Many leggings look opaque when you're standing but turn see-through when you squat. Do the test in front of a mirror in good light. A firm fabric with enough elastane keeps its shape and doesn't go baggy.
A cut with room at the hips and thighs
If a style has simply been scaled up, it often pulls at the thighs and sits loosely at the waist. Look for styles that are explicitly cut for plus sizes.
Flat seams and a gusset
Thick seams can rub on the inside of your thighs. Flat seams lie smoothly against your skin. A gusset gives you more freedom of movement and takes the strain off the seams.
Leggings or tights: which works when?
Leggings replace trousers. They go with long jumpers, tunics and longline blouses, with trainers and flat boots, and for sport.
Opaque tights are worn under a dress or skirt. They look more elegant, go with court shoes and ankle boots, and keep you warm in autumn and winter. With tights, the denier gives you a guide: from around 60 denier, tights are considered opaque.
