Dear Glamory fans,
The wind is howling outside, and all you really want to do is bury yourself in your thickest down jacket. But we know the dilemma: being wrapped up warm often means feeling stiff and shapeless. Discover the art of layering, because when it comes to a plus size layered look (the classic onion principle), many curvy women worry that all those layers will add unnecessary bulk.
But don't worry! Done right, layering is your secret weapon. It lets you make your favourite summer pieces winter-proof and create silhouettes that flatter rather than squash. We will show you how to master the art of layering, with your tights as the most important foundation.
The art of layering, step 1: get the base right (opaque & warm)
Every good house needs a solid foundation. When layering for winter, that foundation is your legs. Thin 20 denier tights are often not enough here. Go for opaque tights (60 denier and up) or our thermal tights.
Why it matters: Opaque, dark tights visually lengthen your legs and create a calm base. When your legs are wrapped up warm, you can often wear one layer fewer on top, which keeps your silhouette slimmer.
Step 2: the "fishnet over opaque" fashion hack
Now for a trick stylists love to add depth to an outfit without making it look bulky. Pull a pair of fishnet tights OVER your opaque tights.
- The effect: You get the warmth of the bottom layer (e.g. colourful 60 denier tights in burgundy or mustard yellow) and the cool texture of the fishnet on top.
- The result: An exciting look that puts the focus on your legs without you feeling the cold. It looks far more sophisticated than a plain pair of woollen tights.
Step 3: make your summer dresses winter-proof
Why should your favourite summer dresses gather dust in the wardrobe? Layering makes them wearable all year round.
Here's how:
- Wear a close-fitting polo neck jumper under your sleeveless summer dress.
- Add your Glamory tights and chunky boots.
- Make sure the polo neck is made from a thin material (e.g. viscose or merino wool) so that it doesn't bunch up under the dress.
Step 4: create vertical lines
In plus sizes, the biggest worry is often width. The answer to that is the vertical line. Use long cardigans, open coats or long waistcoats as your outer layer.
Wearing your cardigan open creates two vertical lines at the front that visually lengthen and "divide" your upper body. The eye travels from top to bottom, making you look taller and slimmer, despite wearing several layers!
Step 5: footwear as the link
To round off the look harmoniously, we connect tights and shoes. If you wear boots or ankle boots in the same colour as your tights (usually black), you visually lengthen your legs to infinity. Want to wear leg warmers? Then wear them so they just peek out of the top of your boots: a cute detail that adds warmth without visually widening your calves.
Conclusion: dare to layer
The art of layering isn't rocket science. It is all about mixing materials (chunky knits with silk, leather with wool) and having fun with combinations. Your Glamory tights give you the confidence that everything below fits perfectly and stays warm.
